IMO Olympiad Eligibility Criteria 2026-27 for Classes 1 to 12

The IMO eligibility criteria 2026-27 determine who can participate in the SOF International Mathematics Olympiad at Level 1 and who can progress to Level 2. For IMO Level 1, students studying in Classes 1 to 12 are eligible to participate, and SOF does not prescribe a minimum percentage or marks requirement. Students participate in the Olympiad corresponding to their current class.

The IMO Level 2 eligibility criteria are different. Level 2 is conducted only for qualifying students from Classes 3 to 12. Students can qualify based on their Level 1 performance through SOF's class-wise top 5%, zonal rank or eligible school-topper criteria. Classes 1 and 2 do not have a Level 2 examination.

IMO Level 1 Eligibility Criteria 2026-27

The IMO Olympiad eligibility criteria for Level 1 are straightforward. Students do not need to clear a preliminary examination or achieve a specific percentage in their school exam to participate.

To be eligible:

Students must be studying in Classes 1 to 12.
They must participate in the IMO corresponding to their current class.
Level 1 has no minimum percentage or marks requirement.
No previous Olympiad qualification is required.

SOF's official IMO information states that students from Classes 1 to 12 can participate and that there are no additional academic eligibility criteria for Level 1.

Is There Any Minimum Percentage Required for IMO Level 1?

No. Students do not need a minimum percentage in Mathematics or their school examinations to become eligible for SOF IMO Level 1.

This makes the first stage accessible to students across Classes 1 to 12 who want to test and develop their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

IMO Level 2 Eligibility Criteria 2026-27

The IMO Level 2 eligibility criteria are performance-based. Simply appearing for Level 1 does not automatically make a student eligible for Level 2.

SOF provides three qualification routes:

A student meeting any of these criteria becomes eligible for Level 2, subject to SOF's ranking and qualification rules.

Who Qualifies Under the Top 5% Rule for IMO Level 2?

One major route to Level 2 is the top 5% class-wise criterion. SOF considers the performance of students appearing in Level 1 and identifies the top-performing 5% within each class for Level 2 qualification.

Importantly, this is not a fixed, universal marks cutoff for every class. SOF publishes class-wise cutoffs based on Level 1 performance. For example, its 2025-26 Level 2 qualification cutoffs differed across Classes 3 through 12.

IMO Level 2 School Topper Eligibility

Being the highest scorer in a school does not automatically guarantee Level 2 qualification.

For the school-topper route, SOF specifies that:

at least 10 students from the same class must have appeared for the Olympiad, and
The class topper must score at least 50% qualifying marks.

If these requirements are met, the eligible class topper can qualify for Level 2.

Is IMO Level 2 Conducted for Classes 1 and 2?

No. Students of Classes 1 and 2 do not appear for IMO Level 2. Their performance and ranking are determined based on the Level 1 examination itself.

SOF conducts the second-level examination only for eligible students from Classes 3 to 12.

How are Ties Handled for IMO Level 2 Qualification?

If two or more students obtain the same total marks, SOF uses section-wise performance and priority to determine ranking and Level 2 qualification.

Therefore, Level 2 selection is not decided only by the overall score when students are tied. Performance in the sections given higher priority by SOF is considered to determine the higher rank.

IMO Level 2 Exam Date 2026-27

Students meeting the IMO Level 2 eligibility criteria can appear for the second stage of the Olympiad.

For the 2026-27 cycle, the main IMO information currently lists Level 2 as expected in 2027 after completion of the three Level 1 exams scheduled for 23 October, 26 November and 10 December 2026. Students who qualify should check the final SOF announcement for the confirmed Level 2 schedule.

How to Know Whether You Have Qualified for IMO Level 2?

After Level 1 results and qualification cutoffs are announced, students should check their results and qualification status. Qualification can result from the top 5% class-wise criterion, top 25 zone-wise ranking, or eligible school-topper criterion.

Students should therefore check more than just their raw marks. Their class rank, zonal position and applicable Level 2 cutoff can all matter.

10. Do I need to qualify for another Olympiad before appearing for IMO Level 1?

No. SOF IMO Level 1 has no preliminary Olympiad qualification requirement. Students in eligible classes can participate through the SOF registration process.

11. Can a Class 12 student appear for the IMO Olympiad?
