A copper releasing IUD is multiload, 375 comes under second- generation IUD. IUD causes local inflammation in the uterus wall that begins about 24 hrs after insert. This inflammation attacks WBC. Then, this WBC produces an antibody which is a toxic substance for sperm. Second generation IUD also releases copper ions which are also toxic for sperm. By this mechanism, IUD prevents fertilization.

The side effect of second- generation copper releasing IUD:

- Anemia

- Backaches

- Spotting between periods

- Vaginal discharge

- Pain during sex

Types of IUD:

Non- hormonal IUD: Those IUD which doesn’t release hormone. In non- hormonal IUD, sperm are killed.

- The First- generation of IUD doesn’t release anything. This is suitable for multiparous women. Example: Lippes loop.

- The second generation of IUD only releases copper ions. This is suitable for nulliparous women. Example: Copper- 7, ML- Cu- 250, ML- Cu- 375.

Hormonal IUD: Also known as the third generation of IUD. In this IUD, progesterone hormone is used. Once placed in the uterus, these types of IUD slowly release small amounts of the hormone progestin to stop sperm from reaching the egg. Effective usually after 7 days of the insert and are usually T- shaped. Example: Progesterone IUD and Levonorgestrel IUD.
