Hint: Camphor is a terpenoid with the chemical formula of $ {C_{10}}{H_{16}}O $ and sodium chloride is an ionic salt with the chemical formula of $ NaCl $ . Camphor does not dissolve in water and sodium chloride dissolves in water. By dissolving and separation, and then evaporation leads to the separation of these compounds.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
Terpenoids are derived from terpenes consisting of multiple cyclic groups and oxygen atoms. Camphor is one of the terpenoids with the molecular formula of $ {C_{10}}{H_{16}}O $ . It is a waxy, flammable solid with strong aroma. Camphor oil can also have a strong aroma and has the properties related to medicinal activity.
Sodium chloride is the ionic salt with chemical formula of $ NaCl $ and it readily soluble in water. Whereas camphor does not dissolve in water. When the beaker containing sodium chloride and camphor, was taken and poured some water. Sodium chloride dissolves in water whereas camphor does not. Now the camphor can be separated and by evaporating the solution the sodium chloride can be left behind.
Thus, by dissolution and evaporation the solution of camphor and sodium chloride can be separated.
Note:
Sublimation is the process of converting the chemical compounds from solid state to directly liquid state. The mixture consisting of volatile and non-volatile can be separated by sublimation. Mixture of ammonium chloride and salt can be separated by sublimation. As camphor is not a salt the mixture of camphor and ammonium chloride was not separated by sublimation.
