Who elects the members of the legislative council?

The union Legislature represents the Parliament and the members in it. It consists of the President and the two Houses namely the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States).In the Parliament there is the Upper and Lower House, in that Lower house represents the Lok sabha.
Rajya Sabha is also called the Upper House of the Parliament; here the members of the Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly. Lok Sabha consists of the member who is directly elected by the people based on Universal Adult Suffrage. The Union Territories are divided into constituencies.

The State Legislature is not uniform in all the States. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh have a bi-cameral Legislature and all the other states of India have a unicameral Legislature. The duties of the members of the Legislative council are similar to the members of the Legislative Assembly.

The Legislative Assembly members elect the members of the Legislative Council. Members who are eligible for the Legislative Council are elected by the Legislative Assembly. The members of the Legislative council (MLC) are also similar like Rajya Sabha, the members of Rajya Sabha also from the field of Art, Literature, Science, and Social services.

Note:The number of seats in the State Legislative Council varies from state to state. According to Article 171, the members of the Legislative Council should not be more than the members of the Legislative Assembly.
