One very popular example is the Tensile Test which is performed on any material before it is given a green signal to be used on a large scale in the manufacturing industry.
In this test, a cylindrical material of suitable length is used (example – mild steel) and force is applied on one of its end and other end being fixed at a support. As a result of this increasing force, two phenomenons take place.
-The first one is the elongation of the metallic rod.
-The reduction of area at a point where it is the weakest.
This phenomenon is represented in the Stress- Strain Curve where the characteristics of the rod is observed and plotted as the force is gradually increased. If we go on increasing the value of force a point will come where the metallic rod will meet failure completely.
Another simple example which we can consider is the stretching of any elastic material, example rubber band. When we pull out the rubber band on both sides, it stretches to a particular length corresponding to the strength of the force. As soon as the force is released it regains back its position. This describes the property of Elasticity of the rubber band.
Note
Elasticity of a material is the property by virtue of which it regains its original position from the deformed position as soon as the opposing force is withdrawn. If the given force exceeds the elasticity level of a material then there is some permanent deformation in the material when the deforming force is taken back.
