Rabindra Nath Tagore was born in Calcutta, in 1861. When he was forty years old, he became a founder of a school at Shantiniketan, near Bhopal. He also wrote a collection of poems, which was later known as Gitanjali, in 1910. Tagore modernized Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic stricture. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla. After a few years, in 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.
