In a school X, 48 students appeared for the ${{10}^{th}}$ class exam out of which 36 students passed. In another school Y, 30 students appeared, and 24 students passed. Hint: Calculate the passing percentage of both the classes that is X and Y using the formula $=\dfrac{\text{passed students}}{\text{total students}}\times 100$ , the class with the higher percentage will be awarded.
Complete step-by-step answer:
Here, we are given that in school X, total 48 students are there out of which 36 students passed.
So, we will find students passed percentage using the formula $=\dfrac{\text{passed students}}{\text{total students}}\times 100$
We have $\text{passed students}=\text{36}$ , $\text{total students}=48$ . Substituting the value in the formula, we get
$=\dfrac{\text{passed students}}{\text{total students}}\times 100$
$=\dfrac{36}{48}\times 100$
On dividing by 12 in denominator and numerator, we get
$=\dfrac{3}{4}\times 100=75\%$
Thus, in school X, 75% of students are passed.
Similarly, taking school Y where a total 30 students are there out of which 24 students passed.
We have $\text{passed students}=24$ , $\text{total students}=30$ . Substituting the value in the formula, we get
$=\dfrac{\text{passed students}}{\text{total students}}\times 100$
$=\dfrac{24}{30}\times 100$
On dividing by 6 in denominator and numerator, we get
$=\dfrac{4}{5}\times 100=80\%$
Thus, in school Y, 80% of students are passed.
As we can see that in school Y percentage of students passed is more than school X.
So, the District Educational officer will give the award to school Y.
Note: Another approach to solve this problem is by finding the number of students failed and its percentage. Then subtracting that value from 100%. For example: it is given that in school X, total 48 students are there out of which 36 students passed. So, number of fail students will be:
$\text{failed students=total students}-\text{passed students}$
$=48-36=12$
Now for finding failed percentage using the formula $=\dfrac{\text{failed students}}{\text{total students}}\times 100=\dfrac{12}{48}\times 100=25\%$
Now, to find pass percentage we will subtract failed percentage from 100%, we will get
$=100\%-25\%=75\%$ . So, the answer will remain the same.
