Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman who was an Indian physicist won the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1930 for his work on the ‘scattering of light and for the discovery of Raman effect’. He was also the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in any branch of science. Most notable work of this great physicist was the astrophysical Chandrashekhar limit. He found that the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf star is 1.44 solar masses and this limit came to be known as the Chandrasekhar limit.
