Step 1: First of all we will solve the expression (i) $x + y = 4;2x - 5y = 1$ to find the values of x and y

\Rightarrow 2x - 5y = 1..........(b)

On multiplying with 2 in the expression (a),
$
\Rightarrow 2(x + y = 4) \\
\Rightarrow 2x + 2y = 8.............(c)

Now, to find the values of x and y we have to subtract (b) and (c) hence,

\Rightarrow (2x + 2y) - (2x - 5y) = 8 - 1 \\
\Rightarrow 2x + 2y - 2x + 5y = 7 \\
\Rightarrow 7y = 7 \\
\Rightarrow y = 1

Now, to find the value of y we have to substitute the value of y in the expression (a),

\Rightarrow (x + 7) = 4 \\
\Rightarrow x = 4 - 7 \\
\Rightarrow x = - 3

The value of x is -3 and y is 1.
