Henry Valentine Conolly was born on December 5th, 1806 to Valentine Conolly of Portland in London. He and his senior sibling Arthur were instructed at Rugby School, Warwickshire. Conolly then moved to Madras and turned into an essayist in the Madras Civil Service from 19 May 1824. He later served in Bellary as a head gatherer. He filled in as an interpreter of Kannada, a clerk, and as magistrate for settlement of cases in the Carnatic area. He was an East India Company official in the Madras Presidency who filled in as justice and collector of Malabar. He played a functioning part in the foundation of the teak plantation to satisfy the needs for teak in boat building.

While the District Magistrate of Malabar Conolly created streams including a trench currently known as the Conolly Canal (although the presentation of railroads around the time the channel was being finished had overshadowed its significance), started 1848, and teak ranches. The teak estate was a spearheading illustration of methodical woods on the board. It contained the absolute best bits of the tropical hardwood teak. The ranches were built by the Madras Government for the stockpile of teak wood to the port of Bombay.
